What the exam covers

Baijiu culture and craft in one exam

Each exam draws from the five areas below. Read the linked articles to prepare, or see the reading list.

Baijiu culture

The culture of Chinese baijiu: where distilling began, vessels and tribute wines, the etiquette of toasting and gifting, and wine in Tang and Song poetry and the festivals.

Baijiu production & tasting

How baijiu is made and tasted: grains and daqu, solid-state fermentation in mud pits, distilling and cutting, ageing and blending, the aroma styles, and how to taste baijiu against the world’s spirits.

Baijiu exam FAQ

Is this an official or national qualification?

No. The Baijiu Proficiency Exam is written and run free of charge by Qifu Baijiu. It is a knowledge assessment by a distillery — not a government or national qualification, not an accredited professional certificate and not a sommelier or taster licence. The certificate records your score and grade in this exam; it is useful for self-study, staff training and working with Qifu, and as free practice for anyone preparing for WSET spirits courses or a Chinese baijiu taster qualification.

What does the exam test?

Two halves: baijiu culture (history, etiquette, poetry and festivals) and baijiu production and tasting (methods and aroma styles, tasting and world spirits). Each exam draws 25 questions at random from the five areas — from daqu, mud pits and cutting heads and tails to aroma styles, tasting and blending. The “What the exam covers” section below links to articles for each area.

How long does it take? Can I use my phone?

Each question has 30 seconds, so the 25 questions take 12 minutes at most — most people finish in 8 to 10. It works in any browser on a computer or phone, with no app or account needed.

Who is the exam for?

Anyone who sells, imports, serves or markets baijiu, and anyone who wants a structured grounding in Chinese baijiu culture. It is free.

Is there a fee?

No. Taking the exam, receiving the certificate, downloading it in Chinese or English and verifying it online are all free of charge.

How does the exam work?

Enter your name, email, phone and job title, then begin. There are 25 timed questions worth 4 points each — single choice, picture, true / false and multiple choice (a multiple-choice question scores only if you pick every right option and no wrong one). Your score, grade and an explanation of every answer appear as soon as you finish; Grade 3 or above earns a certificate, also emailed to you.

How is the exam kept fair?

Questions are drawn at random and timed one by one, and the exam is monitored online. Please work on your own and stay on the exam page. Attempts that break the rules are voided without a certificate, and further attempts may be paused for a while.

Does the grade help me work with Qifu?

The exam is one of the ways Qifu assesses the professional knowledge of distributors and partners. Holders of a valid certificate can join the Qifu partner network and are given priority when applying to become a Qifu distributor, importer or partner — the higher the grade, the higher the priority. We also share product material and industry news with certificate holders.

How long is a certificate valid?

Six months from the date of issue. After that, take the exam again for a new certificate. The certificate page shows how many days remain.

How do I verify a certificate?

Scan the QR code on the certificate or open its link to see the holder, grade, score and validity on our website, including whether it is still valid.

How can I study and improve my grade?

Follow the Baijiu Culture section of our website — history, production, tasting, customs and poetry, updated regularly — and see our reading list of authoritative classics, national standards and books from China and abroad.

Can I retake the exam?

Yes — questions are drawn afresh each time. There is a daily limit on attempts.

Is there an English version?

The English pages use English questions of the same content and level. Every certificate can be downloaded in Chinese or English.
